The social distancing forced families to stay together and live confined for many hours in a row. Habits exposed at work were transferred in the family setting and did not fit or led to conflict. The simple way of spending time revealed that suddenly when the time is lapsing slower than usually, people don't know how to stare or leave in contemplation.
For unknown reasons:
1. what became obvious to everyone during the corona virus: people have time to think and question and fall on the same old theories - the gods are cheating on us, there is a large conspiracy of big pharma, the government is sold to big corporations, etc..
2. when there is no skin in the game, there is no incentive to innovate - education, health, management of limited resources, cooperating among nations at safeguarding resources
3. there is no planning for all elected officials and there is no pay-back for the ones who really played the system - I am looking at you Dalton McGuinty Jr.!
4. there is no plan for tomorrow: the panic is the same as making a teenager son obey your rules but there is no logic and planning for the current situation and to deal with what you have at hand:
- the virus is here to stay and there is no vaccine for now: are we going to hide forever?
- what about the ones who are immunized already, can they go back and restart the life as it was - working together, keeping the fire going
- what do we know about what might alleviate the effect of the virus if it is detected early?
- we cannot shutdown the economy because the most vulnerable people will revolt and it is going to be riots
- the lock down is not going anywhere because there is no protocol to identify persons having the virus or how it is spread from people and that is the peril whenever we open the gates: a new spread and a fast spike in deaths. Find a way to quick test and retrace the origin of any new infection.
Here in Canada we got another four weeks of social distancing. The Internet is slowed down due to increased traffic, and a lot of people have time to rummage through what is happening in the world, around us, many are just streaming audio or video, or the online games just exploded.
I am trying to rein in my daughter's time on iPad or online with some other activities - staying in house is hard. I miss having a place to go outside and work or do something with my hands. I miss my childhood in the countryside. The irony is we are living in a country with large spaces but we are crowding in the Canadian suburbs, commuting everyday for hours to-and-from work.
It is very interesting the limitation to congregate has been inducing a major slow down in many areas of life:
- dental and eye health care
- businesses in food preparation and delivery
- entertainment
- sports and most importantly
- education
Suddenly, the Canadian authorities have realized that there is no guidance for parents to follow their kids education and scramble to offer an online substitute. Where is the option to buy manuals and offer them as an alternative to online education? That was my surprise when I had my first parent-teacher interview and I offered suggestion to my daughter's teacher regarding ways to fill-in the curriculum in schools. For the record, in Canada the children do not receive manuals to learn from. The curriculum is fluid, "in-the-air" and hard to follow. My generation used to get a brick of books at the beginning of the school year and plow through every week.
The humanity relied on people working together to advance and push boundaries:
- hunting big animals
- growing crops
- industrial revolution
- communicating and
- debating the new course for them (politics)
I am still amazed there are educated people thinking there are conspiracies of pharma companies to take over the world, that Asian treatments are effective in treating Corona virus or simply perplexed by the logical steps coming down from the leaders of the world.
Being isolated gives the current government (local or federal) absolute powers. You cannot even raise questions and put forward new ideas because you are muffled or echoed only by the social media channels. Are they monitored or controlled by the current elected representatives?
A few days ago, two doctors challenged the current view comparing the numbers from Corona virus with the ones from a normal season flu. Their long video was a point of view and got millions of eye balls. The next day it was pulled down by the social media on the pretext it spreads misinformation, the opinions are dangerous and retrograded. Where is the open discourse in today world? Are we controlled by social media companies or by governments imposing views through social media?
